In 2017, as The Major e-Retail Fulfilment Corporation prepared for the peak festive shopping season and sought greater efficiencies, it identified a cost-saving opportunity. By stocking inventory onto pods (robotic shelving units) in existing facilities staffed with experienced workers, and then transporting these pods to newly opened greenfield sites with less experienced teams, the company projected savings of several million pounds. NPSG was engaged to oversee the entire pod relocation process, which encompassed the following activities:
Utilised the inventory control system to remove inventory pods from the operational floor.
Relocated pods from the second, third, and fourth floors to the ground floor using large industrial forklifts.
Loaded pods onto articulated lorries for transport to greenfield facilities.
Upon arrival at the greenfield sites, pods were unloaded, lifted to the designated floors, and inducted into the inventory system.
Empty pods from the greenfield sites were then loaded onto empty lorries and returned to the original operational sites for reloading with inventory.
The project spanned eight operational sites and seven greenfield sites.
Work was carried out on a continuous 24/7 shift basis throughout the project.
Approximately 1,200 personnel were deployed by NPSG to deliver this initiative.
